Charges Expected In Weekend Hit-And-Run
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh police expect to file charges soon in a hit-and-run accident that critically injured a cyclist in Lawrenceville.
Authorities took the wrecked black Jeep into custody after they received a call from the suspected driver.
"On Sunday morning – late in the morning – I get a phone call from a potential driver," Pittsburgh Police Sgt. Dan Connolly said. "We have interviewed him. We did take custody of his Jeep."
Then bicyclist was riding with several friends at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday when he was hit by the vehicle on Liberty Avenue near Fourth Street.
Amanda Lowe was awakened by the sound of the crash.
"I heard it – and I heard a really terrible crashing sound," she said. "I was upstairs in my house. I ran to the window, I looked out and I saw the guy in the street. He was laying in the street. He [was] all twisted up."
Apparently, the driver drove several blocks with part of the mangled bicycle stuck in his front grill.
"The driver actually took it out of the Jeep and placed it to the side," Sgt. Connolly said.
Police say they will review their findings with the district attorney and file a warrant.
Meantime, the cyclist remains at Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition.
