Stolen Safe, Truck Recovered In O'Hara Twp.

SHARPSBURG (KDKA) -- With the help of an anonymous tip, investigators have located a 4,000-pound safe and the vehicle used to steal it from a local business overnight; but they're still looking for those responsible for the heavyweight heist.

Police say someone used a company forklift and pickup truck to steal the safe from a warehouse at Thompson Electric along Ali Street in Sharpsburg some time after 2:15 a.m.

"Keys were in the truck," Sharpsburg Police Chief Leo Rudzki added, "Keys were in the forklift."

Officials issued an all-points bulletin for the stolen truck early this morning; and shortly after 7 a.m., an anonymous caller notified police after spotting the vehicle in front of a house along Parkview Boulevard in O'Hara Township.

While the burglar or burglars managed to get away with the safe containing thousands of dollars in checks and cash -- they never managed to actually get it open before apparently ditching it along with the stolen truck.

"It would probably take a bomb to open that safe," Chief Rudski explained. "It doesn't look like it was tampered with any kind of equipment or tools."

Investigators have processed the stolen safe and truck; and the chief says the suspects appear to have left a lot more behind. "Looks like we can get some good prints off of it…"

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
