Police: Ellwood City Hit-And-Run A Hoax

By Kym Gable

ELLWOOD CITY (KDKA) -- A 14-year-old boy who claimed he was injured in a hit-and-run accident is no longer considered a victim.

Instead, police in Ellwood City now say he and his friend are suspects in the case.

On September 28, the boy told officers a vehicle ran him over on 3rd Street.

The boy's mother even released photos of his wounds in hopes of flushing out a culprit.

After weeks of investigation, police determined it was all a hoax, concocted by the boy and a friend, who took his dad's pick-up truck for a joyride.

Lt. David Kingston tells KDKA's Kym Gable the passenger got scared and jumped out of the truck. The vehicle then struck him.

That's when he made up the story about the hit-and-run.

Lt. Kingston says the driver, also 14, later confessed to officers. The driver faces traffic violations. Both boys face charges of filing false reports.
