Police: Suspect Shot After Waving Gun In Apartment, Pointing It At Officers
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Investigators say a man was shot by police officers in Pittsburgh's Brighton Heights neighborhood Wednesday night after waving a gun at them in an apartment building.
The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. in the 3500 block of California Avenue.
According to Pittsburgh Police, officers were first called to the apartment for a report that a man was in a hallway with a gun.
When police arrived, investigators say they found the man inside and ordered him, repeatedly, to drop his weapon and show his hands.
Police say the suspect allegedly attempted to hide the weapon behind his back. Then, authorities say he raised the gun and pointed it in the direction of the officers, who fired their weapons.
The suspect was struck multiple times in the lower extremities. He was taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.
Meanwhile, the incident has left the people who live in and around the apartment worried.
"It's not a good place to feel safe if these shootings keep happening on this street," said Amy, a neighbor. "In the past, probably there was some kind of problems in the apartment building, I believe. From my understanding, the landlord had [thrown] some people out and new people had moved in."
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office is investigating.
