Police: Baby Safe After Abductor Shot And Killed By Officer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police say a baby has been recovered and is safe and her alleged abductor is dead after a prompting an Amber Alert overnight.

According to police, Jarred Brown Garnham, 21, was killed by police after he abducted his girlfriend's 8-month-old baby and used her as a human shield.

Police say Garnham took the little girl after getting into an argument with his girlfriend, Ashley Spring, at a convenience store. Garnham then took off with the baby in Spring's Toyota Avalon, prompting an Amber Alert early Sunday morning.

After the Amber Alert was issued, police near Neville Island spotted the car and Garnham took them on a chase, ending at the Pittsburgh International Airport, where he used his car to ram into a barricade of police cars.

Garnham then used the baby as a human shield, threatening to kill himself and the baby with a knife, police say.

He was able to get through and drive through two different fences at the airport. After that, Garnham tried again to get through a wall of police cars by pressing on the accelerator while threatening to hurt the baby.

"At which point, the tires caught on fire," Lt. Andrew Schurman, of Allegheny County Police said. "This created an exigent situation in which the officers had to act fast to get both the actor and the child out of the car."

Schurman says at that point, officers broke the windows in the car and attempted to pull Garnham and the baby out of the car, when Garnham pulled a knife on the child.

After that point, an officer fired one shot directly at Garnham's head, killing him.

The incident is still under investigation.
