Police: 17-Year-Old 8th Grader Brings Gun To Wash High, Prompts Lockdown
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A Wash High student was taken into police custody after prompting a lockdown at the school Tuesday afternoon.
Just before dismissal, a student reported to a school resource officer that she witnessed another student drop a gun in the hallway.
Superintendent Dr. Roberta DiLorenzo said two students were involved in horseplay, when the gun fell out of the student's pocket.
The school went into immediate lockdown and through video surveillance and interviews of other students, the suspect who had the gun was identified and taken into custody.
DiLorenzo says the school does not have any metal detectors, but has more than 100 surveillance cameras.
Students were eventually released to go home around 4 p.m.
The weapon was also recovered.
At no time were any shots fired, or was anyone threatened.
Police say the student who had the gun was a 17-year-old eighth grader.
He has been released to a juvenile probation officer and is being taken to a juvenile detention center.
All after school activities were canceled for Tuesday night, but classes and activities are expected to resume as normal Wednesday.
