Polar Vortex Returns This Week, Some Snow Possible

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Two mild days are in store for the Pittsburgh area, before a big change takes place at mid-week.

According to AccuWeather the Polar Vortex is expected to plunge over most of the United States as the week progresses.

Today, skies will be mostly sunny and temperatures will warm to 60 degrees or a little better across southwestern Pennsylvania.

With clear skies, temperatures will fall off to about 42 degrees for a low tonight. Then, we can expect a day of increasing cloudiness on Tuesday with a late night sprinkle possible. The high will be about 65 degrees.

On Wednesday, we get a glancing blow from the Polar Vortex. Fortunately, the coldest core of air will plunge into the central part of the country, but we will chill down ourselves.

AccuWeather says only the Southwest, Hawaii, Alaska and South Florida will escape the grip of the upcoming arctic blast that the polar vortex can be blamed for.

"The polar vortex is a large pocket of very cold air, typically the coldest air in the Northern Hemisphere, which sits over the polar region," stated AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

On Wednesday, our high of 44 degrees will be reached in the morning. Then, temperatures will fall during the day.

Highs will be in the 30s on Thursday and Friday. A little snow is possible on Thursday and lake-effect snow is possible on Friday for the Interstate 80 counties.

However, this forecast will be fine-tuned as the week goes on.
