PNC Park Usher's Family Wants Teen Tried As Adult
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The family of a PNC Park usher who was robbed as he was having a heart attack is reacting to news of an arrest in the case.
They want the 17-year-old suspect tried as an adult.
Police believe the teenager happened on 58-year-old Michael Schacht and instead of helping him, he allegedly took advantage of him and left him in the street to die.
The Schacht family released a statement Tuesday night:
"Our family has learned that a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested for this heartless tragedy. Although, we are appreciative of certain events disclosed, we are devastated to learn that it will be handled in the juvenile court system. We can only hope that truth will prevail and justice be served."
The 17 year-old, whom police are not identifying, is charged with car theft and robbery. Police say there's not enough evidence to charge him with homicide.
"My heart goes out to his family," said Jennifer Rossman, a co-worker of Schacht's at PNC Park. "He was a wonderful guy, and I really am going to miss him."
Rossman says she actually talked with Schacht before police say he suffered an apparent heart attack while driving home.
"I gave him a hug and told him it was great to see him. And it really just choked me up to think of watching him walk away and never making it home to his family," said Rossman.
Police say on the way home Schacht was in distress, stopped his car and they believe he was slumped over when the 17-year-old approached him, pulled him out of his car, stole his vehicle and left Schacht to die in the street.
Rossman said," It's a shame to steal from somebody and take his car and leave him the middle of the road to die. It's just sickening!"
The teenager was taken to Shuman Detention Center.
