Small Plane Crash Lands Near Beaver County Airport
CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A pilot and his passenger walked away after their vintage 1940's airplane crash landed in a wooded area near the Beaver County Airport on Friday evening.
Beaver County Sheriff George David said the plane had just taken off moments earlier when the veteran pilot, from West Virginia, quickly realized that something was wrong when the engine started sputtering.
George said the pilot tried to make it back to the runway, but missed it by a few dozen yards.
George told reporters, "The pilot and his passenger don't have a scratch, there was an angel with them."
There was no fire when the plane crashed, officials said the aircraft had just recently been re-conditioned, and it was being taken up for a test run.
Federal officials will investigate, and crews will attempt to remove the downed plane on Saturday.
Damage was described as "minimal."
