Downed Plane Catches Fire At Pittsburgh-Monroeville Airport
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- A husband and wife suffered minor injuries late Sunday afternoon when a small plane went off of a runway at the Pittsburgh-Monroeville Airport.
Officials say it was just after 5:30 p.m. when the four-seater plane traveled off the airport runway at the airport on Logans Ferry Road and ended up in a wooded area.
According to police, an out-of-town couple was inside the aircraft at the time of the incident.
"The aircraft went off into the wooded area there, caught fire," said Chief Doug Cole, of the Monroeville Police Department. "They successfully got out of the aircraft with minor injuries."
The aircraft, which caught on fire, was surrounded by a cloud of smoke and that caught the attention of neighbors.
"I came up and I saw the plane on fire, and I saw them spraying it with foam," said Ken Sebastian, a witness.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are handling the investigation.
