Pittsburgh Weather: Winter Storm Brings Heavy Snow, Ice Accumulations To Western Pa.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- As promised, we saw a return of a winter wonderland today.
Snow showers are expected to continue through most of the morning hours before snow changes over to rain showers around noon.
Snow totals of three to five inches are expected, and at this point, it looks like snow totals in Allegheny County will mostly range from three to four inches.
Snow showers began at around 3 a.m. in Washington County, quickly moving to the north.
Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties were under a Winter Weather Advisory through noon. Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties are under the advisory until 6 p.m.
Forest, Indiana and Jefferson counties remain under the advisory through 1 a.m. Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Fayette and Westmoreland Ridges are under a Winter Storm Warning until 1 a.m. Thursday.

In all, over six hours of consistent and steady snow fell across Western Pennsylvania this morning, one of the biggest snow storms of the year.
In fact, as of 9 a.m., the Pittsburgh airport had recorded 3.0 inches of snow. The single-day most snow this season fell on Jan. 20 when we recorded 3.4 inches of snow.

So what's next?
Well, the official forecast called for rain showers the rest of the day, but there is just some light spot showers off to our west.
Snow showers will be wrapped up and out of here by 11 a.m.

Data does show a break in rain from then until around 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., followed by light rain moving in from the west after that. Temperatures will continue to climb for the rest of the day with our high of 46 degrees hit just before midnight.
The storm prompted hundreds of school delays and closures across the western Pennsylvania region.
