Pittsburgh To Host National Veterans Wheelchair Games
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh will play host to the 31st Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games this summer.
Hundreds of vets from around the world are expected to attend.
Steelers President Art Rooney II and former Steeler Rocky Bleier, a Purple Heart recipient, will be honorary co-chairs.
Organizers for the games held a "Breakfast of Champions" at the Rivers Club to showcase some of the local guys who plan to compete.
"They compete in 17 different sporting events from water events, to sprints, to air rifles, to rugby--each and every one of them has a story and each one of those stories is that they have moved forward, not allowed disability to hold them back," Bleier said.
But the event needs volunteers and money.
"We still need to raise about another $100,000 to host the kind of games that we'd like to give our veterans here in Pittsburgh," Dr. Rory Cooper, a competitor, said.
The games take place the first week of August.
