Pittsburgh Public Works: Second Ave. Is On City's Repaving List
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The mystery of who owns Second Avenue is over.
Pittsburgh Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski, who on Tuesday said the road was the responsibility of PennDOT, told KDKA on Wednesday, "After researching with my engineering folks and talking to PennDOT, and looking into it, that portion of the roadway is the City of Pittsburgh's."
That's important because the road is a patchwork of patched potholes.
The section of Second Avenue near Brady Street, which Kasczorowski on Tuesday said was the responsibility of PennDOT, is on the city's repaving list for next year.
But that's only part of the issue.
Police say the deadly accident there on Tuesday morning that killed 43-year-old Theresa Anderson was caused by a driver passing a truck on the inside and clipping the truck.
Drivers have always treated that part of Second Avenue as a four lane road, which Kasczorowski says is wrong.
"I've been passed on the left and the right," Kasczorowski says. "I try to stay in the middle; it is a single-lane road."
But the portion just east of the accident scene is clearly marked four lanes.
It's only as the road changes from concrete to asphalt that the lane markers end, but there is no sign indicating the beginning of single-lane traffic.
Kasczorowski tells KDKA the city's traffic engineering department is going to look at whether signs or painted lines are needed to indicate the single lane.
Additionally, he adds, "Next year, when we do the resurfacing of that, we'll see what we can do to enhance those line markings so people know and understand it is a single-lane road."
Tuesday's accident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
