Pittsburgh Police To Study Service Revolver Ammunition
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Deputy Pittsburgh Police Chief Paul Donaldson sent out a memo Thursday telling officers that the department would conduct a study on the "reliability and suitability" of city-issued ammunition used by officers in their service revolvers.
The Donaldson email was issued just hours after a city police officer was critically wounded in a shootout in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood.
The suspect was wounded in the exchange of gunfire as well.
Donaldson said that a number of concerns have been raised about the ammunition, even though the ammo met FBI specifications.
In East Liberty last month, there was another shootout involving a police officer and a suspect.
The ammunition review may take several weeks or longer to complete.
Officer Morgan Jenkins, a 1999 graduate of Riverview High School in Oakmont and eight-year veteran of the police department, who was injured in Thursday's gun battle, is being treated for bullet fragments that ended up near his spine.
The other injured officer, Michelle Auge, a 13-year veteran of the police department, suffered a broken orbital bone and two broken fingers.
