Pittsburgh Police Deliver Holiday Meals To Less Fortunate
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh police officers came together today on Pittsburgh's South Side for an annual Thanksgiving tradition.
The officers spent the morning and afternoon hours delivering hot holiday meals to the elderly, needy and homeless throughout the communities in the city.
City of Pittsburgh police squad cars were once again lined up on Carson Street. Officers wading into a crowded and noisy restaurant; but it's not what you think, instead, it's just another way of celebrating Thanksgiving.
"Seventy-two turkeys, 320 homemade pies, 400 pounds of mashed potatoes, 400 pounds of stuffing, gravy," listed Penny Folino, of Penny's Diner.
The restaurant was the hub of activity as Penny's, Pittsburgh police and the Pittsburgh Rotary Club took Thanksgiving to those in need.
"We're covering the entire city of Pittsburgh," said Folino.
If there was a chief of the event, it would have to be Officer Christine Luffy. She is the organizer extraordinaire.
"On my list, we have 1,163 that we are delivering to today," said Officer Luffy.
Papers with orders, potatoes, turkey and all the fixings, boxes of food – it's the logistics of this labor of love.
"It makes me feel fantastic," said Folino.
"There not on the clock. They're volunteering their time to come down and do it," said Diane Richard, of the Pittsburgh Police Department. "It just doesn't get any better than this."
"This is truly rewarding," added Officer Luffy. "I know that we give a lot, but we take so much as well."
So it goes, another Thanksgiving - thanks to some great citizens and great cops who bring new meaning to protect and serve.
"When people see us today they'll be real happy to see us," Officer Luffy said.
