Police Searching For 2 Suspects Accused Of Shooting At County Sheriff's Deputies
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A search is underway for two people accused of firing shots at sheriff's deputies in Squirrel Hill.
The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday when two sheriff's deputies in an unmarked car encountered two men on ATVs. The sheriff's office said one of the men circled the car and then both riders sped up Beechwood Boulevard, where a gun battle later ensued.
The sheriff's office said the two deputies followed the ATVs up Beechwood Boulevard until the two came to a stop at Douglas Street. One man stopped in the street while the other stopped on the sidewalk and began firing as the deputies got out of their car.
Sheriff Kevin Kraus said, "They got out of the car and almost immediately the individual opened fire in them, fired multiple rounds. Both deputies drew their weapons and returned fire, approximately eight to 10 shots."
The two men fled, and the deputies do not believe they hit them with their gunfire.
Neighbors heard the shots and then the sirens, but thankfully no one was hurt. There is no evidence of property damage, though some were shaken by it.
"I was putting my kids to bed. I heard something that didn't sound like fireworks, sounded like gunshots," said Jamie Rosenthal.
Throughout the night, law enforcement searched for the men, who were later spotted in Greenfield but not captured.
"At this point, we believe we're making progress. We're working in conjunction with the city and hopefully, our goal is to bring these individuals into custody as soon as we can," Kraus said.
