Pittsburgh Parking Authority Approves Rate Increases

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The daily and lease rates at Pittsburgh Parking Authority lots and garages will rise beginning August 1.

On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Parking Authority board of directors approved an increase in the daily and lease parking rates charged by the Authority's attended parking facilities. The price change affects eight downtown garages, the Mon Wharf and Second Avenue Parking Plaza surface lots and Authority garages located in Shadyside and Oakland.

This is the first increase in parking rates to be adopted by the Authority since 2004, according to David Onorato, head of Pittsburgh Parking Authority.

Daily rates for all-day parking will increase by $1 at Mon Wharf and by $2 at Second Avenue Parking Plaza.

All-day parking at First Avenue, Wood-Allies, Ft. Duquesne and 6th, and Ninth and Penn garages will increase by $2.25. At Mellon Square, Oliver and Smithfield/Liberty, it will rise $4.25, and Third Avenue Garage will rise by $3.25 per day.

Hourly rates will rise proportionately.

Monthly leases at Mellon Square and Oliver garages will rise by $45 per month and by $40 per month at Third Avenue. The other five facilities will rise by $25 or less. Lease rates for the Authority's Oakland and Shadyside facilities will increase by $20 per month. Leases in 15 surface lots will cost an additional $30 per month.

"The adjustments approved today include increases lower than those planned by the private operators who submitted bids to operate our garages as part of a monetization that was rejected by City Council in 2011," Onorato said.

"They are also lower than the rates contained in Council/Controller plan proposed response to the monetization plan, and are even below those recommended following a third-party study of city-wide parking prices commissioned by the Authority in March 2012."

The board's changes do not affect on-street metered parking or the full-day and monthly lease rates at the Grant Street Transportation Center.
