Pittsburgh Magazine's Conboy Says Pens Lack Strong On-Ice Leader
PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) – Sean Conboy, from Pittsburgh Magazine, joins The Fan's Chris Mack to talk about the piece he wrote after the Penguins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Conboy says he got the feeling, from the top down, starting in the regular season through the playoffs that "there is not a very strong on-ice leader."
He talks about the advanced statistics, which showed the Penguins among the leaders in puck possession but near the bottom in finishing. He references New York Rangers' goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist, who mentioned in a post-series interview that his team just packed it in and waited for the Pens to make a mistake.
"The recipe to beating the Penguins is to give them the puck," he said.
Conboy talks about the mentality that the stars are not paid to go in the trenches and block shots. He thinks that the players that did that in 2009, like Petr Sykora, weren't paid to do that either.
Looking back on this season, Conboy says, "Nobody is really willing to step up and do what it takes."
He added that the owners need to realize that "it's not about the ingredients, its about the alchemy."
