PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pittsburgh is getting its first women's sports bar next month. Title 9 says it plans to open in East Liberty in February.

The concept was developed by Sherree Goldstein, who will open the bar in the adjacent space next to her other business, Square Cafe, which has been running in the neighborhood for nearly 22 years.

Goldstein showed KDKA-TV's Lauren Linder the new venture, set to open next to Square Café, the restaurant she's been running in the neighborhood for nearly 22 years.

"Women's sports are coming along a new path. It's been a long time for it to happen, and so we want to support women," Goldstein said.

Behind the Title 9 name

The new spot off Centre Avenue is called Title 9 after the landmark 1972 law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in educational programs and activities that receive federal funding.

"We call it the 37 words that changed women's sports," Goldstein said.

The bar takes over a part of the café that was used for dining and is in the process of renovations. The project, about a year in the making, came about after Goldstein saw similar bars popping up across the country. Goldstein feels the timing is perfect with all of the momentum nationally and locally.

"I go to many women's games in the city, and viewership is there. People are coming and so now that it's happening broadly, I think it's a great opportunity for us to expand that," Goldstein said.

Come this spring, the city will even have a women's soccer team.

Bar playing women's sports

"It's not a women's bar, it's a sports bar playing women's sports," Goldstein said.

Goldstein wants the business to be a safe place for everyone, young and old, not a bar hangout, and she wants to even find ways to partner with girls at the primary school level.

"Anything that we can support that brings girls and women along the journey where it's equal, then we're there to support it," Goldstein said.

A press release said the bar will exclusively air women's sports, but Goldstein said she has yet to make a decision about airing major men's sporting events.

"We haven't said yes or no, because, you know, we want to see how things play out. I want to be a smart business person," Goldstein said.

Food and drink at Title 9

Title 9 will serve cocktails and mocktails and highlight local brewers. The menu will have snacks and handhelds with vegan and vegetarian options. Goldstein says some Square Cafe items will make an appearance, like tots and veggie burgers.

The establishment has plans for a full bar, eight TVs, garage windows and a rooftop bar.

Title 9 says it will be hosting a series of pop-ups ahead of its official grand opening, which is projected for mid-February.
