Pittsburgh Culture Expands Worldwide; Appears In Shanghai

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- Through the work of Andy Warhol -- Pittsburgh is making an impact worldwide.

"A lot of people in China probably never heard of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and now they have," says Jesse Kowalski from the Andy Warhol Museum.

Shanghai, China, is just the latest stop in a tour of Asia -- which includes Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo, where this cultural exchange serves the dual purpose of promoting our city and region.

"You can't read the signs and characters in these places but then you see the Andy Warhol Museum one of the four Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh, and it makes you satisfied to see our outreach," Kowalski adds.

Shanghai is home to 24 million people -- and center of China's jaw-dropping transformation from ancient culture to modern superpower.

It has spawned the same kind of consumer culture celebrated in Warhol's work -- and the Chinese are anxious to see it.

As part of the outreach -- the Warhol staff trains their Chinese counterparts and offer a whole Chinese curriculum Shanghai's schools.

While back home, local high school students exchanged so-called time capsules of goods with students in Shanghai and open them together over a teleconference.

At an opening night party, sponsor BNY Mellon touts the virtues of Pittsburgh.

"Our ability to sponsor this exhibit surely reflects the roots of our corporation," says Stephen Lackey from BNY Mellon.

Pittsburgh was once the world's largest exporter of steel. Now though it's native son, Warhol is exporting soup cans and good will throughout the world.
