PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A Pittsburgh defense attorney is accused of trying to cover up his friend's fatal overdose.
According to the criminal complaint, 37-year-old Kevin Abramovitz is accused of not calling 911 to report a fatal overdose and then trying to cover it up.
The incident happened back in late June inside an apartment in Squirrel Hill on Annette Way. The apartment is owned by Abramovitz.
Abramovitz was allowing his long-time friend to stay in the vacant apartment.
During the afternoon of June 24, the victim and two others began using heroin. The drug was said to have been purchased in the Hill District with the label "Call of Duty."
The criminal complaint says one of the witnesses passed out and woke up to find the unnamed victim unconscious on the floor.
According to police, Abramovitz and his girlfriend, Danielle Smith, had been at the apartment earlier, but left. They returned after hearing about the overdose.
Smith performed CPR, while Abramovitz tried using Narcan on the victim. Neither of their efforts were successful.
Abramovitz and Smith allegedly told the others not to talk to anyone about the incident and not to call police because they might get in trouble.
Police then say Abramovitz had the body moved. The body of the victim was found wrapped in a purple comforter near a house on Fair Oaks Street.
Witnesses say Abramovitz and Smith moved the victim's car three blocks, wore rubber gloves and went as far as to wipe the car clean of any fingerprints and potential DNA evidence.
The couple also reportedly destroyed a cell phone belonging to the victim.
Abramovitz and Smith were arrested and released without bond. A call to the attorney representing Abramovitz was not returned.
When Smith was arrested, police say several drugs were found in her possession, including Xanax and methamphetamine. An investigation showed the drugs belonged to Abramovitz.
Abramovitz was arrested earlier this month and is facing a list of charges including, recklessly endangering another person, conspiracy, possession of a controlled substance and intimidation of witnesses.
