Pitt Professor Facing Drug Charges
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The biography of tenured pharmacy professor Billy Day is a long one.
It includes secondary appointments in chemistry, environmental and occupational health and the Clinical & Translational Science Institute, and a visiting professor appointment in computational biology.
But now he stands accused of manipulating the purchasing system for the school to get drugs for himself, particularly pain killers.
"This case developed when one of the university employees noticed a pattern of apparent problems with drug purchases," said Ken Service, of the University of Pittsburgh. "And it turns out that allegations were made that one of our textured professors, Professor Billy Day, had been ordering drugs using grant funds, and that complaint has been turned over to the courts."
The case developed within the past month and University Police were assisted in their investigation by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
Did the system work? Or are there bugs in the system that allowed it to happen?
"We were encouraged by the fact that situation was brought to light by our university personnel, so that seems to indicate that the procedures are okay, but as we would with any situation of this sort ,we'll take a look at the procedures just to make sure," Service said.
