Pitt Panthers Retire Larry Fitzgerald's Jersey
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - On their first day as an official member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Pitt football program made sure the number "one" will never be seen again on the playing field.
At a fan party Monday night to celebrate entry into the new conference, Pitt announced the retirement of former Heisman Trophy finalist wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald's college jersey.
Fitzgerald only played two seasons at Pitt, but his career still ranks as one of the best in the history of college football.
The 2003 Walter Camp national player of the year still holds the Pitt record with 34 career touchdown receptions before leaving for an NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals. In his final season at Pitt, Fitzgerald won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver and finished as the runner-up to Oklahoma Quarterback Jason White in the Heisman Trophy Award voting.
His jersey will be the ninth retired by Pitt joining end Mike Ditka (No. 89, 1958-60), running back Tony Dorsett (No. 33, 1973-76), offensive lineman Bill Fralic (No. 79, 1981-84), running back Marshall Goldberg (No. 42, 1936-38), defensive end Hugh Green (No. 99, 1977-80), quarterback Dan Marino (No. 13, 1979-82), offensive lineman Mark May (No. 73, 1977-80) and linebacker Joe Schmidt (No. 65, 1950-52).
