Pitt Football Lands One Of WPIAL Top Recruits
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - After getting off to a hot start this season and then dropping consecutive games to Iowa and Akron, the Pitt football program was looking for some good news, and that good news came through today.
One of the top recruits in the WPIAL, Cornerback Jordan Whitehead out of Central Valley, has given his verbal commitment to the Panthers.
Tribune-Review Pitt Football beat writer Jerry DiPaola joined the Starkey and Mueller show to talk about this get for the Pitt football program and how surprised he was by Whitehead's choice.
"I know West Virginia put on a very hard push, "DiPaola told us. "I got the feeling that, Tony Gibson is a very good recruiter, I thought he was going to get him. Ohio State was in there because White head said a few days ago, Urban Meyer was in contact with him more than anybody else."
DiPaola went on to tell us what it was that separated Pitt from those schools and how they landed the highly coveted recruit.
"The way Pitt recruited Jordan Whitehead, in Paul Chryst's low-key, back away style, 'Jordan, here's what we can offer you, here's what's going to happen when you come. You're going to have to work for everything you get.' They didn't go to every single one of his games, they didn't go to every single one of his practices, they weren't calling him everyday, and I think that was it. I just talked with Mark Lyons, the coach here at Central Valley, and he told me the same thing. Paul Chryst handled it the right way."
Whitehead is currently playing wide receiver at Central Valley but told DiPaola he plans on playing cornerback at Pitt.
"I think they're going to start him out at corner, I even asked Jordan that a few minutes ago, and he said 'yes, they recruited me as a corner."
