Pitt And PSU Could Meet In Bowl Game
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- The renewal of the long-awaited Pitt-Penn State football rivalry could happen sooner than we thought.
The schools are scheduled to commence a four-game series beginning in 2016. But with some of Penn State's NCAA-imposed sanctions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal lifted earlier this fall – including a four-year bowl ban – rumors are swirling on a possible bowl game featuring the Panthers and Nittany Lions.
Pitt is entering the bowl season with some momentum, winning its final two games, including a 35-23 victory at Miami in the regular season finale to cement postseason eligibility.
"At the end of the year, you look see if you're bowl eligible," Pitt coach Paul Chryst said. "Two weeks ago it was about playing Syracuse, then this week it was about Miami. [I] think if guys can just try to approach [it that way] and learn, then at the end of the year you look up."
Meanwhile, after a 4-0 start, Penn State lost six of its final eight games to limp into bowl season.
The Nittany Lions last postseason game came in the 2012 TicketCity Bowl, a 30-14 loss to Houston, with Tom Bradley as their interim coach.
Pitt and Penn State last met in 2000 at Three Rivers Stadium. Sparked by a Rod Rutherford touchdown catch, the Panthers won, 12-0.
