Pirates, Yankees Complete A.J. Burnett Trade
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- It's finally official. The Pirates and New York Yankees have completed a trade that sends pitcher A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh
The teams agreed to the deal Friday, but it was subject to Burnett passing a physical. He was at Pirates camp Sunday in Bradenton, Fla., to take his exam.
Commissioner Bud Selig also had to approve the deal because of the money involved.
The Pirates will pay $13 million of the $33 million Burnett is owed over the next two years.
In exchange, they send minor leaguers Diego Moreno, a relief pitcher, and outfielder Exicardo Cayones to the Yankees.
Last season, Burnett was 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA in 33 appearances for the Yankees. He struck out 173 and walked 83.
For his career, Burnett is 121-111 with a 4.10 ERA having spent time with the Florida Marlins (now the Miami Marlins), Toronto Blue Jays and the Yankees.
To start the season, the Pirates' rotation looks like it will be Burnett, Erik Bedard, James McDonald, Jeff Karstens and Kevin Correia.
Charlie Morton will likely be on the disabled list at the beginning of the season.
