Pirates Top Brewers, 2-0
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- The Pirates bounced back from an 11-4 loss to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0.
The Pirates (61-68) held the Brewers to just five hits Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park.
Aaron Thompson made his major league pitching debut, giving up just four hits over four and 1-3 innings.
Jason Grilli got the win after shutting out the Brewers over two and 2-3 innings and striking out four; Jose Veras pitched a perfect eighth and Joel Hanrahan allowed just one hit in the ninth for his 32nd save.
Ryan Braun, who had two hits, led off the ninth with a single and Prince Fielder followed with a walk but Hanrahan snuffed the rally by striking out Casey McGehee, Yuniesky Betancourt and Jonathan Lucroy in succession.
The Pirates had four hits. Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker each had an RBI. Jose Tabata had Pittsburgh's other two hits.
Thompson, 24, had his contract purchased from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game. He was needed to fill in for All-Star right-hander Kevin Correia, who went on the disabled list Monday with a strained oblique muscle.
Shaun Marcum (11-4) lost for the first time in eight starts since the All-Star break, as he gave up two runs and four hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out four.
