Pirates To Honor Chuck Tanner
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- In honor of former Pittsburgh Pirates Manager Chuck Tanner, the Pirates announced today that the club will wear a patch on the right jersey sleeve throughout the 2011 season. The black and gold patch will feature Tanner's jersey number 7 enclosed in a "Stargell Star."
The Pirates will take the field for the first time wearing the commemorative patch on Friday, April 1, when they take on the Chicago Cubs in Chicago.
Tanner, who passed away at the age of 82 on February 11, guided the Pirates to the World Series Championship in 1979, was an integral and loved member of the Pirates family, and most recently served as a Senior Advisor to Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington.
