Pirates Streak Snapped With 2-0 Loss To Tigers

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- After a season high four-game winning streak, the Pirates had the opportunity to make it five in a row as well as a chance to get back to that .500 mark Sunday afternoon over at PNC Park.

The pitching was again solid, but Paul Maholm continues to be the victim of no run support when he takes the mound as the Bucs fell to the Detroit Tigers 2-0.

The Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak with the win.

Maholm (1-7) gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings.

"Paul's going out there and he's doing his job," said Garrett Jones, Pirates outfielder. "No matter what the offense is doing, he's doing his job and keeping us in the ball game, and for whatever reason, you know, it's kind of his number where we're not getting the hits when he's pitching. But hopefully, next start things will turn around."

For Detroit, Rick Porcello (4-2) took a no-hitter into the sixth before giving up Ronny Cedeno's leadoff double. He struck out three and walked two in his first start in nearly two weeks.

Porcello's previous start was wiped out by rain, but he hardly looked rusty. He kept the surging Pirates off balance all afternoon and even added a single during a rare plate appearance.

The Tigers' Jose Valverde worked out of a two-on, none-out jam in the ninth to earn his 11th save in 11 opportunities.

The Pirates have Monday off but the Atlanta Braves come to town next for two games starting Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
