Pirates' Starter Vance Worley Discusses Winning Arbitration Case
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Pitchers and catchers reported on Wednesday to Bradenton, Florida. Though many players have been at Pirate City for a little while, today is what many consider the official "start" of the 2015 baseball season.
A much larger workout is expected tomorrow after players go through their morning physicals.
Many pitchers worked on their offensive game and did some tossing while a few position players were hitting in the cage.
Pirates' starter Vance Worley was there fresh after winning his arbitration hearing. Worley won his case against the Pirates, earning the desired $2.45 million as opposed to the Pirates filing of $2 million.
"It's a tough deal," Worley said. "You're going in there, you can't say anything, it's your word against theirs."
"It's really up to the arbitrators, what they feel and who presents their case better and what facts are out there. That's really it."
For Worley, he acknowledges that the arbitration process is a necessary evil and that maintaining the right perspective is important.
"Yeah, it can be touchy. At the end of the day, it is business," he said. "It's a job just like anybody else has. All you can do is worry about what you can do on the field to train, perform and make yourself better."
Worley started 17 games for the Pirates in 2014, going 8-4 with a 2.85 ERA.
According to multiple reports, Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez will have his arbitration hearing today.
