Pirates Lose To Mets, 8-1
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- The Pirates lost in an 8-1 romp to the New York Mets on Friday night.
Charlie Morton was going for his seventh win of the season.
So was Dillon Gee of the Mets.
But Morton had his worst outing of this year in which his ERA rose from 2.52 to 3.08, giving up seven runs – six earned – in just four innings.
Gee became the first Mets' rookie starter to improve to 7-0, and New York has won all nine of his starts. He allowed one run and eight hits in a career-high eight innings with no walks and five strikeouts.
"He's in a good place right now," Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle said. "You're going to have to beat him, you're going to have to stretch the bats out, you got to commit to one side of the plate and stay there. We talked about that – we weren't able to do it. We looked out there, we weren't able to hit out there."
Jose Reyes went 3 for 5, Angel Pagan had two hits and scored twice and Josh Thole went 3 for 5 for New York. Each had a hit during the Mets' five-run fourth inning.
Pittsburgh began the bottom of the first inning with three consecutive singles. Andrew McCutchen drove in Jose Tabata, but from that point through the seventh, Gee faced only one over the minimum.
It was the second consecutive game in which the Pirates did not have an extra-base hit.
