Pirates Lose 1-0, Losing Streak At 6 Games
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs engaged in a pitching duel Wednesday night at PNC Park. However, the team that does not call Pittsburgh home pulled out the win.
Matt Garza scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings as the Cubs pulled out a 1-0 victory.
The loss is the sixth straight for the Pirates, who have now fallen below the .500 mark (54-55).
Starlin Castro's solo home run off of Chris Resop in the eighth inning was all the offense the Cubs would need in the game.
For Pittsburgh, Charlie Morton pitched seven scoreless innings. He only allowed five hits while walking two and striking out seven.
The Pirates had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but were unable to bring him home.
Derrek Lee led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Ludwick.
However, Carlos Marmol struck out Pedro Alvarez and Ryan Doumit to earn his 22nd save of the season.
Alvarez was the only Pirate to have a multi-hit game by going 2-for-4.
The Pirates fell below the .500 mark for the first time since June 21 when they were 36-37.
The Pirates and Cubs will close out their four-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at PNC Park.
Rodrigo Lopez (2-3, 4.40 ERA) is scheduled to take on James McDonald (7-5, 4.17 ERA).
