Pirates Looking Into Acquiring Starting Pitcher Matt Garza From Cubs
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - With the trade deadline approaching, there are rumors swirling about which players the Pirates may be interested in acquiring. David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reported today that one of those players is Cubs starter Matt Garza.
"From what I've been told by people who would know, they are very serious," Kaplan said. " The big question is, do you want to take a run at trying to win a championship knowing you may not be able to resign Garza and then you watch some elite prospect play against you for the next 10-12 years. That's the big question."
When it comes to what Garza would bring to the Pirates, you can count Kaplan among those who has been impressed.
"He's been outstanding, I mean outstanding, since he came back from injury," he said. "His ERA is under two. He touches 96 when he has to run it up there, but he's sitting comfortably at 94. His breaking stuff is phenomenal. His control has been good. And most importantly he's pitching deep into ball games. Has health has been good. You look at all of that, and he's the best available arm you're going to get out there."
Kaplan also talked about what the Cubs would be asking for in return for Garza, and it looks like the asking price is more than one high end prospect.
