Pirates Go Above .500, Beat Astros, 7-3
HOUSTON (KDKA/AP) -- The Pirates picked up another road win against the Houston Astros, winning 7-3 on Wednesday night.
Charlie Morton (7-3, 3.21 ERA) pitched five innings and allowed three runs and eight hits. Daniel McCutchen (2.34 ERA) came in for three innings, giving up three hits and no runs. Joel Hanrahan earned his 19th save following another perfect ninth inning.
This win brings the Pirates' record to 34-33. The Bucs are above .500 this late in the season for the first time since August of 1999 and now lead the three-game series against the Astros (25-44).
Trailing 2-3, the Pirates pulled ahead of the Astros in the sixth. The rally started with an RBI single by Garrett Jones. Then Jose Tabata scored after a throwing error by Houston's Brett Wallace.
In the same inning, Neil Walker's sacrifice fly drove in Jones from third. Xavier Paul added a two-run homerun in the seventh.
Walker also tripled in the first and drove in three runs for the night.
