Pirates Fall To Cardinals, 3-2
ST. LOUIS (KDKA/AP) -- The Pirates dropped their second game of the season as they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Lyle Overbay gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead at the top of the first with a two-run homer to right field.
Pirates starting pitcher James McDonald had a solid start with four hits, two earned runs, four strikeouts and four walks.
However, the Cardinals came back in the fourth when Lance Berkman hit a double and scored when Allen Craig hit a single to center field.
After the Cardinals tied it up at 2-2 when Albert Pujols hit a sacrifice fly, McDonald, who had 87 pitches, left the mound.
Chris Resop gave up an RBI single in the seventh to Pujols for the win.
The Pirates' best chance to tie came in the eighth when Pedro Alvarez was at bat with two runners on base and two outs, but Trever Miller struck him out.
Kyle McClellan rebounded from a shaky beginning to pitch well in his first career start, allowing just two runs over six innings.
The Pirates, who clinched their first road series against the Cubs over the weekend, are now 1-1 in this series and 3-2 for the season.
They play one more game in St. Louis before their home opener at PNC Park at 1:35 p.m. Thursday.
