Pirates Dump Lyle Overbay
Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Give the Pirates ownership credit because they just admitted to a $5 million mistake.
The team has announced that they've designated first baseman Lyle Overbay for assignment to make room on the active roster for Derrek Lee.
A team designating a player for assignment has 10 days to trade, waive or release a player.
When signing him to one-year, $5 million contract over the winter, they'd hoped that Overbay would provide offense to the middle of the order.
Overbay was a complete bust both offensively and defensively, batting .227 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs.
The Pirates will make a corresponding roster move for the Ryan Ludwick acquisition once Ludwick reports to the ballpark.
The team could place shortstop Ronny Cedeno on the disabled list because of soreness in his knee.
