Pirates Continue To Trim Spring Training Roster

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to trim their roster ahead of Opening Day and made a couple of roster moves Saturday morning.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, infielder Jordy Mercer was sent to Class AAA Indianapolis.

In 21 plate appearances this Spring Training, Mercer was hitting .238 with five strike outs and one walk.

The Pirates also reassigned pitchers Shairon Martis, Jo-Jo Reyes and Doug Slaten to minor league camp.

Reyes (2-1) allowed 10 earned runs in seven innings this spring. He posted a 12.86 ERA to go along with six walks and four strikeouts.

Slaten (0-1) allowed five earned runs in five innings of work this spring, while Martis (1-1) did not allow an earned run in 4 2-3 innings.

Martis struck out two and walked none as well.

These moves leave the Pirates with 35 active players in camp.
