Pirates Bats Silenced For Second Straight Night; Cubs Win, 5-1
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) -- For the second consecutive night, Cubs' starting pitching dominated.
And for the second straight night the Pirates suffered defeat at the hands of an inferior team. Chicago pitcher Paul Maholm -- a former Pirate -- pitched eight innings and allowed just one run on four hits to send Pittsburgh to a 5-1 loss.
In return, the Cubs (40-56) scored five runs off Pirates starter James McDonald.
Starlin Castro hit a solo home run in the first inning to put Chicago up, 1-0. Garrett Jones tied the game, 1-1, in the fourth with a solo shot of his own to right field.
David DeJesus hit an two-RBI double to deep right field to put the Cubs back up, 3-1, in the fifth inning. Alfonso Soriano added a two-run home run to left field -- his second homer of the series and third and fourth RBIs -- for a 5-1 advantage.
Pittsburgh (54-42) managed just five hits all night after totaling only two hits the night before in a 2-0 loss. It appeared the Pirates might have a late rally in them after Neil Walker doubled and Andrew McCutchen walked to start the bottom of the ninth inning.
However, Jones flied out and Casey McGehee grounded into a game-ending double play.
