Pirates Add Ex-Cub Farnsworth For Minor-League Depth
PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- The Pirates have continued to add minor-league depth by acquiring veteran relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, the team announced early Friday evening. He will report to Triple-A Indianapolis immediately.
The right-handed Farnsworth, 37, went 2-0 with a 5.76 ERA and 19 strikeouts against seven walks in 39 relief appearances with Tampa Bay this season before he was designated for assignment and released last Friday.
Farnsworth originally pitched for the Chicago Cubs, working out of the bullpen on their 2003 NL Central championship team, and later, the Tigers, Braves, Yankees, Royals, and Rays over a nine-year period. In five years of playoff baseball, he has appeared in six postseason series.
In 16 career playoff innings, Farnsworth has allowed nine earned runs, fanning 17 hitters, walking four unintentionally, and posting a 1.12 WHIP.
He also ranks third among active pitchers with 849 games in the big leagues, falling only behind outgoing Yankees closer Mariano Rivera (1,098) and Mets hurler LaTroy Hawkins (925).
He is 42-62 all-time, with 52 saves, a 4.29 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, and 936 strikeouts in those games, posting a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of around 2.40.
