Pirates 14th Overall Draft Pick Planning To Skip College, Turn Pro
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - The Pittsburgh Pirates 14th overall selection in the 2013 MLB Draft, High School Catcher Reese McGuire joined the Pirates pregame show with Dan Zangrilli and Vinnie Richichi to talk about what it felt like getting taken so high in the draft.
"It was an awesome moment that I'm going definitely cherish and remember for the rest of my life. It was awesome that I had my family right there by my side. The Pirates are a great organization. I was a little bummed at nine, and then I was just hoping for the best after that and I just told myself that whatever happens is going to happen for a reason, and I'm glad to be with this organization."
McGuire is unlike most high school catchers in that he calls his own game, and tells us a little about how that helped prepare him for the next level.
"I've been calling it since I was 12-years old. I love being able to just look out on the field constantly instead of turning my head to look to the dugout. Absolutely this has helped me in my career because offensively it just transfers over to knowing the situation, knowing a certain count, what kind of pitch maybe they're most likely to be throwing."
McGuire also gave us a look into his game offensively, what players he looked up to growing up and what areas of his game the Pirates said they'd like to see him work on.
