Philly Host Macnow: Burnett Return A Real Possibility, Downie Routinely Disappoints

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – 94 WIP's Glen Macnow has been talking Philadelphia sports for a long time. He joined Colin Dunlap, Josh Miller, and Jim Colony on "The Fan Morning Show" Thursday to talk about a couple items of interest to both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

When it comes to the rumors that the Pirates might try to re-acquire A.J. Burnett, Macnow sees Burnett returning to Pittsburgh as a real possibility.

"The Phillies are going to go into sell, sell, sell, mode very soon," Macnow said. "They have a lot of older veterans that they need to dispose of. From Philadelphia's point of view, he is very tradeable. I talked to somebody from here the other day that said the Pirates had been looking at him - not that anything is imminent. I don't want to overstate it, but that, from that person's perspective, he's a guy that they like there, that the fans like there, that was comfortable there and could go back there."

As for the Pens signing former Flyer Steve Downie, Macnow isn't as high on the acquisition as many in Pittsburgh are.

"He takes dumb penalties," Macnow said. "He's got no offensive game whatsoever. He will sometimes kind of inspire things out there by making a check or two, but he'll usually get a penalty at the end of it. I know that Rick Tocchet thinks he can work with him, really likes him - and I like Tochett a lot. I think Tocchet's a sharp guy. If anybody can, he can. I know that Downie has worked to overcome balance issues caused by a high degree of deafness and so maybe that's going to change his game. But geez, I've watched the guy first time around with the Flyers, second time around with the Flyers, and I just think he's one of these guys that's ultimately going to have you slapping yourself in the forehead."
