Phillies Complete Sweep, Beat Bucs 6-5 In 10 Innings
PHILADELPHIA (KDKA) – The Pirates erased an early deficit only to watch the bullpen squander a late lead before succumbing in extra innings to the Phillies Sunday afternoon.
Raul Ibanez hit a game-tying two-run home run off of Jose Veras to tie the game 5-5 in the eighth inning.
Ibanez helped the Phillies (68-39) complete the three-game sweep with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Philadelphia a 6-5 win.
Ibanez also hit a solo homer in the second inning.
Veras was brought in after Joe Beimel allowed a one-out double to Ryan Howard.
After a fielder's choice out, Ibanez belted the first pitch he saw from Veras over the left field fence to tie the game.
Tony Watson (0-2) came in to record the final out of the ninth inning for the Pirates (54-52). In the 10th, he struck out Howard to start the inning before allowing consecutive doubles to Hunter Pence and Ibanez.
Jeff Karstens allowed three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five in seven innings of work.
For Philadelphia, Vance Worley allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. He did not issue a walk and struck out seven.
Antonio Bastardo (4-0) retired the Pirates in order in the 10th inning and was credited with the win.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Xavier Paul gave the Pirates their first lead of the game with a two-run single to left field.
The Phillies would respond with two runs of their own in their half of the fifth to retake the lead 3-2.
In the sixth inning, Lyle Overbay put the Pirates ahead with a two-run homer to right field. Garret Jones' RBI double to center field in the seventh inning capped the scoring for the Pirates.
During the game, the Pirates acquired outfielder Ryan Ludwick from the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named later.
The Pirates will return home to PNC Park to open up a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
Paul Maholm (6-10, 3.16 ERA) is scheduled to take on Carlos Zambrano (7-6, 4.59 ERA).
