Phil Pritchard Discusses Life As Keeper Of The Stanley Cup
PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Phil Pritchard, Keeper of the Stanley Cup and Curator at the Hockey Hall of Fame, joined Stacy Kauffman Sunday morning to talk about his job. Pritchard told Kauffman that players only started spending a day with the Cup in 1995.
"I remember when the Penguins were winning in the early 90s, we'd come down and stay with them in town, and they'd do a bunch of stuff, and it would usually end up back at Mario's place or something like that as headquarters," Pritchard said. "Then we'd take it away, and maybe a week later, we'd be back because there'd be another bunch of functions. So, it's changed, it's evolved over the years."
Pritchard was along for the celebrations that occurred after the Penguins won the Cup in 2009.
"I went with Sidney Crosby back to Cole Harbour, I was over in Michigan with Coach Bylsma. It's on the road every day, so we're always somewhere. It's a unique experience; hockey history is happening all of the time," Pritchard said.
Pritchard told Kauffman that one rule with the Cup is that you can't pick it up unless you've won it, and that applies to fans as well as players.
