Person Killed In Fayette Co. Rock Climbing Accident

DUNBAR (KDKA) -- A person has died after a rock climbing accident in Dunbar, near the Ohiopyle State Park.

Fayette County emergency dispatchers say it happened at Coll's Cove Sunday afternoon around 2:20 p.m.

Officials say a middle-aged male was rock climbing with a group of people and fell off of a ledge. He was pronounced dead around 4 p.m.

"Basically, it's just a ledge line out there, probably 40 to 50 feet high," said Chief Mike Breakiron, with the Dunbar Volunteer Fire Department.

The victim's name has not been released.

Rescue workers told KDKA that they are trained in making rescues in the area, but only have to make one of this nature about once every two years.

"Very difficult, its rugged terrain. If you can't go up over with rope rescue, you have to carry them through the bottom, which is all rocky and terrible terrain," said Breakiron.

A Facebook page for Coll's Cove says that it is "one of SWPA's premier rock climbing areas, especially for bouldering."
