Pens Celebrated 1st Cup 20 Years Ago Today
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – While the Pittsburgh Penguins saw their 2011 playoff run come to an early end, today is a day to celebrate the franchise's history.
On this date 20 years ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins captured their first Stanley Cup title.
Mario Lemieux's four-point night in Game 6 powered the Penguins to an 8-0 rout of the Minnesota North Stars.
The Penguins trailed the series 2-1 before winning three straight to win the Stanley Cup.
Lemieux was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy after recording 44 points (16 goals, 28 assists) in only 23 games.
The Penguins' playoff run was marked by several iconic Pittsburgh sports moments including "The Save" by Frank Pietrangelo, and Lemieux splitting the North Stars' defense and undressing Jon Casey in Game 2 of the Finals.
Of course, the Penguins would go on to win the Stanley Cup again in 1992 by sweeping the Chicago Blackhawks.
