Pens, Caps To Raise Money For KHL Crash Victims
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals will be raising money to benefit the families of KHL players who lost their lives in a plane crash last month.
According to a press release from the Penguins, jerseys worn during their head-to-head matchup on Oct. 13 at CONSOL Energy Center will be autographed and auctioned off.
On Sept. 7, a plane carrying Lokomotiv Yaroslavl players and coaches crashed, killing 44 people.
On Oct. 13, the Penguins and Capital will wear jerseys with special commemorative Lokomotiv patches.
The jerseys will be auctioned on NHL.com until Oct. 27.
"We compete against each other hard on the ice, but off the ice we all are part of one big hockey family," Penguins General Manager Ray Shero said in a statement. "Many of our players had friends on the Lokomotiv team. All of us in hockey were touched by this tragic loss. We just thought the Oct. 13 game was a unique opportunity for our two teams to work together to raise money for the children and families of the players, coaches and staff who lost their lives."
Before the game, a ceremonial faceoff will be held between Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.
Remembrance bracelets will be sold by wives and girlfriends of the Penguins and Capitals at the game as well.
All of the proceeds will be given to the victims' families.
