Pens Beat Red Wings, 5-4 In Shootout

DETROIT (KDKA) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins pulled out a win in Detroit, beating the Red Wings, 5-4 in a shootout.

James Neal scored the only goal of the shootout against Red Wings goaltender Joey McDonald, who didn't allow a goal on 10 shots after coming on in relief  in regulation.

Pascal Dupuis led the Pens with two goals and an assist.

His first goal put the Pens on the board with 5:46 left in the first with a backhander on Wings' goaltender Jimmy Howard. Chris Conner and Jordan Staal had assists.

Then, Chris Kunitz drove to the front of the net and deposited a rebound behind Howard with 43 seconds left in the first period. Kris Letang and Dupuis assisted on the goal to give the Pens a 2-0 lead.

Midway through the second period, Dupuis struck again with a shorthanded goal to put the Penguins up 3-0. Staal picked up his second assist for the night on the play.

Howard was chased from the net after Tyler Kennedy made it 4-0 on a backhand rebound goal set up by Kunitz and Craig Adams at 13:16 of the second.

Despite the Pens' dominance in the first 30 minutes of the game, the Red Wings mounted a comeback that forced overtime and a shootout.

Henrik Zetterberg started it with a backhander at 17:41 in the second to make it 4-1.

Then in the third, Valtteri Filppula, Danny Cleary and Mike Modano each scored on Brent Johnson to tie it up, 4-4.

Johnson slammed the door on all three Red Wings shooters in the shootout before Neal's goal gave secured the 5-4 victory.

The Pens' win comes on the heels of a 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers Sunday afternoon.

It also comes on the same day forward Matt Cooke was suspended for the remainder of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs because of a head shot to New York Rangers' defenseman Ryan McDonagh.
