Penn Township Suspect Rescued After Attempted Burglary
PENN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Penn Township police had to rescue a suspect in an attempted burglary.
Police were called to Home Drive in Level Green just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after a man tried to break into a house.
"An individual had booted the back door in and was confronted by some homeowners who chased that individual off," Penn Township Police Chief John Otto said.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Staab, of Trafford, ran into the woods.
After weather conditions forced a State police helicopter to ground, Penn Township police went into the woods.
"The patrol officers on the ground were able to continue that search, were able to continue going along some of the trails that were through those wooded areas and eventually came across the young man who was absolutely physically exhausted," Chief Otto said.
He suffered from mild hypothermia, dehydration and was unable to walk.
"The patient was then moved onto a stokes basket, a wire basket, at which time he was attached to a rope system and hauled up the steep embankment and transferred to an ambulance and transported to the hospital for evaluation," Edgar Grant with Penn Township Ambulance Service, said.
He was taken to UPMC East before he was arraigned on charges of attempted burglary, attempted criminal trespass and a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief.
Police believe Staab was also involved in a separate incident overnight.
