Penn State Beaver Students, Officials Remain On Alert
MONACA (KDKA) -- The Penn State Beaver campus remains on alert this weekend as authorities continue to investigate a possible threat made on Twitter that allegedly referenced the shootings at Virginia Tech.
As police continue to search for the suspect, students are coping with the heightened safety precautions.
Penn State Beaver was eerily quiet for a Saturday night, a weekend that should have been bustling with activity. But PSU Day, a campus celebration and open house, was canceled.
"They canceled the bonfire last night, all the activities for today," said Caitlyn Arroio-Myers, a student.
The manhunt continues for former student and basketball player Michael Mollett who is accused of posting a threat on Twitter on Thursday night referencing the Virginia Tech shooting spree.
Mollett was also charged in the alleged assault of a female student in Harmony Hall in September.
"The way that the police handled it, I think it's actually really going to help Penn State and other schools because of the text alerts and the way that the campus police handled it and the security we had," said Arroio-Myers.
On Friday, Mollett's mother appeared on KDKA begging her son to turn himself in.
Meanwhile, classes were canceled on Friday and students were told to stay in their dorms.
"When I drove up they were like, 'Why are you here? Who are you seeing? Are you picking up? Are you staying?' I had to ask, 'Is it okay for me to stay?' I don't even know," said Sara Locy, who is visiting a friend on the campus this weekend. "Is it safe?"
"I've definitely seen more police on campus the last couple of days than I have my whole time being here," added Eric Baumbaught, another student. "They've been scoping out the dorms, they've been in and out."
Police and the FBI continue to look for Mollett and until he turns up, it will be difficult to conduct business as usual on campus.
There is no word yet on whether classes will resume on Monday.
