Penn State Awaiting Judgment From NCAA In Wake Of Scandal

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A judge has set a date to hear oral arguments on pretrial motions In the case of two former Penn State officials facing charges in connection to the child sex abuse scandal.

Meanwhile, there are also new developments involving the future of the Penn State football program.

The once mighty and esteemed Penn State football program was stained by the child sex abuse scandal, which sent long-time former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky to prison, may now face the judgment of the body that regulates all sanctioned college athletics.

In an interview on PBS Tavis Smiley Show, Mark Emmert stated the agency he oversees is looking very closely into what happened at Penn State. It's an event he said is as unprecedented as it is shocking.

"I've never seen anything as egregious as this in terms of just overall conduct and behavior inside a university and hope never to see it again," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "There have been people that said well this wasn't a football scandal, well it was more than a football scandal. Much more than a football scandal."

Emmert stated punishment could include the "death penalty," or the dissolution of the entire football program.

"I don't want to take anything off the table. The fact is, this is completely different than an impermissible benefits scandal like what happened at SMU," Emmert said.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson says the school will respond within days to the NCAA's request for information as it considers possible punishment in the Sandusky scandal.

Two figures cited by the Freeh Report as playing a critical role in the covering up of Sandusky's repeated child sexual assaults over the past 14 years are one step closer to their day in court.

Lawyers for former athletic director Tim Curley and former university vice president Gary Schultz will give oral arguments and submit pretrial motions on Aug. 16.

Both Curley and Schultz face charges of lying to a grand jury about what they knew and when regarding the criminal activities of Sandusky.
